Our Instructors
Carly Born

Naginata: Ikkyu (1st kyu)

Kyudo: Godan (5th degree black belt)

During her time in Japan, Carly studied both naginata and kyudo and actively encourages us to better ourselves as martial artists.

John Born

Kendo: Shodan (1st degree black belt)

Kyudo: Yondan (4th degree black belt)

While living in Japan with his wife, Carly, John studied kendo at the local dojo where he attained shodan with the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF).  After being approached by several members of the Carleton community, John offered to instruct us as much as he knew about kendo.  To supplement his teachings, John has extended invitations to the Steve Voss sensei of Hokkyokusei to come and offer us further instruction.  As John constantly says, "I'm just starting the path like you so I have as much to learn from you as you have from me."
